MIKAYLA YURMAN (Founder and Editor in Chief): Can you explain to our viewers who aren’t familiar with Desmond is Amazing, who you are?
DESMOND IS AMAZING: My name is Desmond is Amazing and I am an 11 year old drag kid, awarded LGBTQ+ advocate, actor, model, fashion designer, voguer, and the founder of the first drag house for drag kids, the Haus of Amazing.
MY: What message do you hope to send out to the LGBTQ+ community, young and old?
D: I want people to be able to express themselves however they want to no matter what anyone says. Just be yourself, always.
MY: What or who inspired you to get into drag?
D: I was inspired to get into drag the first time I saw RuPaul’s Drag Race. I thought the queens were so beautiful and amazing so I said “I want to do that!” I would take my moms bed sheets, towels, t-shirts, high heels, and even bubble wrap and cardboard and wrap it around my body and on my head to make pretend dresses and wigs.
MY: How do you feel about your fame and inspiration to people everywhere?
D: I am so thankful that I am able to use my fame to inspire others. I hope that people will see me and know that it is okay to be free to be themselves also. I don’t ever want to become unfamous because then I wouldn’t be able to help as many people.
MY: Do you have any advice for people struggling to find themselves and learn who they are?
D: I think they should start small, like just put on one thing that makes them feel beautiful, like a necklace or a lipstick, or something like that. Then they can add on more when they get more comfortable. Also, it’s okay to just express yourself no matter what your age, race, gender, orientation, identification, or abilities are.
MY: What is one phrase or mantra you live your life by?
D: Be yourself always no matter what anybody says and just pay the haters no mind because they will never be as fierce as you.
MY: Who is your favorite drag queen?
MY: Who is your favorite musical artist and why?
D: I really like No Doubt right now. I love the 1990s.
MY: What is your favorite color and why?
D: I love pink because pink is such a beautiful and happy color.
MY: What is your favorite look that you’ve done and how would you describe your overall aesthetic?
D: My favorite look was the pink dress I wore to DragCon NYC last year on day one. My overall aesthetics is very 90s, club kid, artistic, creative, and colorful.
DESMOND AND FAMILY -
MY: What do you want the parents and family to know about having LGBTQ+ members in the family in terms of love and acceptance?
D: I think that you should love the members of your family unconditionally. All people are different and all families are different. People need to step back and allow others to be who they are, especially within families. I think the biggest problem is that people are too worried about what other people think about their family. And that to me is so shallow and selfish. I would rather have a family unit that is full or love and respect for one another than a family unit filled with anger, resentment, regret, and depression.
MY: Describe your family and values in three words!
D: Love, respect, truthful
